Vietnamese students in Laos and their Laotian friends and teachers took part in a writing contest, with the theme of a Hanoi song, to celebrate the city's 1,000th birthday in October.

The contest started in April and has since received 369 essays about the song "Nguoi Ha Noi" (Hanoi people) by Nguyen Dinh Thi. The best nineteen have been sent to Hanoi for assessment and two were considered excellent.

Participants are third to seventh graders and their teachers from Nguyen Du School under the Overseas Vietnamese Association in Vientiane.

The school vice principle Nguyen Thi Phuong Loan said the school had expected to receive 350 participants only.

Her superior Truong Van Tai said the contest was "interesting and meaningful" as it helped students and teachers to find out more about Hanoi and at the same time improve their writing skills.
