Best shopping in Vietnam at Standard Tourism Service stores

Shops given the “Standard Tourism Service” (STS) tag by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism have gained “a popularity all of their own” with visitors to Vietnam ’s largest city.

Quality, service and price are often the greatest concerns for tourists wanting to buy up souvenirs and gifts to remember their trips to the tropical country.

Since 2004 the tourism department recognized 41 Standard Tourism Service (STS) shops, where tourists can feel at ease with quality goods, service good prices.

Select shops also meet other criteria concerning space and traffic accessibility, including five department stores, six supermarkets, 13 silk and handicraft shops, four tailors and four jewelry shops.

At the Nga Art and Craft Shop on Le Thanh Ton Street you can find everything from wood and lacquer pen cases and tea trays, to bowls, vases and large paintings.

Meanwhile, the 27-7 Handcraft Center on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street in Binh Thanh District feature different handicraft items made from local materials like rattan, bamboo, fern, hyacinth, lacquer ware, and terra cotta.

Silk is a favorite item among many tourists who love the smooth and endurable fabric made from natural yarn. The two big names in the list offering this type of product are Khai Silk with two shops on Dong Khoi Street and Kelly Silk on Le Loi Boulevard.

Vietnamese traditional dress ao dai is considered a cultural heritage of the country, and several shops on the STS list offer this particular item, among them Miss Aodai on Nguyen Trung Ngan Street, which is a rendezvous for many travelers, especially Japanese tourists.

Embroidered paintings are another specialty in Vietnam. XQ Saigon on Pham Hong Thai Street is an established name, where tourists can choose for themselves pictures depicting landscapes, people or still life.

As lacquer ware is a traditional product dating back decades, the best STS shops in the city include Phuong Nam Lacquerware on Nguyen Trai Street, Saigon Fine Arts on Pasteur Street, and Tay Son on Vo Thi Sau Street.

Plazas, supermarkets

Truong Xa Tax Plaza on Nguyen Hue Boulevard, Diamond Plaza on Le Duan Boulevard, Zen Plaza and Citi Plaza on Nguyen Trai Street, and the five supermarkets affiliated to Co-opmart make the grade in terms of high quality shopping for almost anything on your list.

Jewelry shops owned by the Saigon Jewelry Co. (SJC) and Phu Nhuan Jewelry Co. (PNJ) in District 1 stock a wide selection of products made of gold, silver and gemstones.

For those who want to tailor a Vietnamese ao dai can drop in Lien Huong shop on Pasteur Street. The shop also offers silk, brocade, and many other different types of fabrics suitable for tailoring such a charming costume.

Happy shopping!
