National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines has announced it will increase airfares on domestic flights from May 16.

Accordingly, a one-way ticket on the Hanoi-HCMC route will cost between VND1.05 million (US$51) and VND2.23 million ($108), excluding 10 percent in value added tax.

The airfare for this route is now from VND860,000 to VND1.82 million.

After the Ministry of Finance approved a 22.7 percent increase in domestic airfares in the middle of last month, low-cost airline Jetstar Pacific and private carrier Air Mekong raised their prices on May 7.

Vietnam Airlines and its unit Vasco currently hold more than 70 percent of the domestic airline market share. Jetstar Pacific and Air Mekong have the remaining share.
