Sunset on the beach

Sensation Restaurant is outdoor dinning area

Sunrise Hoi An Beach Resort near Cua Dai Beach in Hoi An reminded me of a castle surrounded and protected by water.

On one side is the beach and on the other is a river running to the former port of Hoi An where merchants from faraway lands such as Japan, Portugal, and the Netherlands came in the past to trade.

I went past a small canal that crisscross the area before reaching the resort. I was amazed at the sight of the imposing lobby with its high ceiling probably as high as at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House. From there the magnificent palm- and coconut-shaded pool seems to merge into the ocean.

The resort has an interesting architecture which allows all of its rooms to take advantage of the sea views.

Sunrise Hoi An Beach Resort has 210 rooms and suites and 12 beachfront villas. There are four F & B outlets - Sensation Restaurant, Sao Bien Seafood Restaurant, the Sunset beach bar, and Lobby Lounge bar.

The resort has a kids' corner, fitness center, and a spa.

There are free shuttle buses to Hoi An and Da Nang every few hours.

According to Sven A. Saebel, its general manager, Sunrise Hoi An targets families and, generally, Vietnamese customers. There is a kids' corner with a drawing teacher and babysitter.

My room had a large balcony with a nice view of the pool and the beach, but I spent little time indoors, preferring rather to be on the beach and swimming pool.

For those who need their daily dose of sport or just exercise, there is beach volleyball court and wind surfing and kayaking facilities as well as a fitness center.

I checked out the fitness center (which is free for guests) and spent an hour exercising with Swiss balls. There were trainers to show me the ropes.

The buffet breakfast at the Sensation Restaurant had an array of dishes from all over Vietnam, many international dishes, and a variety of fruits. There were food stations serving traditional dishes like mi Quang and pho. The large restaurant is located on the ground floor and has an outdoor dining area next to the swimming pool that overlooks the sea.
