Saigontourist, Vietnam's leading travel company, will take main responsibility to promote river tourism in Ho Chi Minh, a Saigon Times report says.
Nguyen Thi Hong, vice chairwoman of the city People's Committee, assigned Saigontourist the task on January 26.
The city's Culture, Sports, and Tourism Department will work with the company to prepare a river tourism development plan and submit it to the committee within this quarter.
The city is facing strong competition from both international destinations and other local tourist spots. It needs a new tourism program to attract international tourists as well as secure its position as the first stop in Vietnam, Hong said.
The committee has instructed HCMC to upgrade its existing river ports and build more in three central districts 1, 8, and 9; and in two rural districts Cu Chi and Can Gio.
Saigontourist last year served nearly 1.63 million tourists, and earned VND13.04 trillion (US$626 million), up 10.5 percent from the previous year.
