The Ho Chi Minh City zoo on Thursday unveiled three giraffes, two males and a female, that it bought from Thailand at VND4 billion (around US$190,000).

The newcomers, all around three years old, add up to a total of five giraffes - two males and three females - in the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens, the zoo director Phan Viet Lam told Tuoi Tre.

According to Lam, the new giraffes measure 3 meters in height.
The average female giraffe is about 4.6 m high, but some males grow to a height of more than 5.5 m and may weigh as much as 1,200 kg.

They are kept in two separate areas in the zoo, Lam said.
