Indian private carrier Jet Airways joined Vietnam’s aviation market this month by offering daily flights between New Delhi and Mumbai and Ho Chi Minh City.
Jet Airways Naresh Goyal said at the route launching ceremony in HCMC Wednesday said the new flights to Vietnam’s commercial hub were driven by the increasing commercial and religious activities between the two countries, Thoi bao Kinh te Saigon Online reported.
Goyal said Vietnamese export to India increased by 46 percent between 2008 and 2012. Meanwhile, more Buddhist pilgrims have been coming from Vietnam to India and the surrounding area, he said.
The new route is enabled by a codeshare agreement between Jet Airways and Vietnam Airlines through the international gateways of Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Jet Airways thus is allowed to place its marketing code on Vietnam Airlines’ flights from Bangkok and Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. In turn, Vietnam Airlines can place its marketing code on Jet Airways’ services between Mumbai, Delhi to Bangkok, Singapore, and Ho Chi Minh City.
Goyal said they offered the new service, which transits in Bangkok, on November 5 and after a week, 77 percent of seats have been filled.
He called that a positive sign which will possibly prompt his carrier to open a new route to Hanoi next summer.
Pham Ngoc Minh, general director of Vietnam Airlines, said around 46,000 people flew between India and Vietnam in 2013 and that rose 25 percent in the first half this year.
Jet Airways is using 106 aircraft that carry around 24 million passengers a year for an annual revenue of some US$3.3 billion.
