The coming New Year's Eve and Christmas season will be celebrated with fireworks, light shows and several other artistic activities in downtown Ho Chi Minh City from December 19 to January 2.
According to an official announcement from the city's People's Committee last week, the 15-minute fireworks show will take place at the Saigon River Tunnel in District 2 and Dam Sen Park in District 11 at 12 a.m. on January 1, 2014.
The light show will run from next Thursday to the second day of the new year at eight streets and five venues in downtown, including Nguyen Hue Street; Le Loi Street; Dong Khoi Street; Le Duan Street; Pasteur Street; Pham Ngoc Thach Street; the Truong Son Nguyen Van Troi Nam Ky Khoi Nghia intersection; Ton Duc Thang Street; the Ho Chi Minh Statue Park; Lam Son Park; the Opera House's outdoor area; Cong truong Quoc te traffic circle -- known as Turtle Pond -- in District 3; and the Quach Thi Trang Roundabout.
Each street will feature a distinct theme; for instance, Dong Khoi Boulevard's is "The Southern Land" featuring the yellow color of mai flowers (Ochna integerrima, popularly known as the Vietnamese Mickey Mouse plant); Ton Duc Thang Street will be adorned with doves, sunflowers and sails per the theme "Seas and Islands," whereas the highlight of the Truong Son Nguyen Van Troi Nam Ky Khoi Nghia intersection will be the image of Thanh Giong (Saint Giong) riding on his horse to link Tan Son Nhat Airport with downtown, stretching from Tan Binh District through Phu Nhuan District to District 1.
The festival "Ho Chi Minh City Welcoming the New Year 2014" will officially take place at September 23rd Park in District 1 for six days from December 27 to January 1, featuring an exhibition of the city's socioeconomic achievements.
The opening ceremony will be held at the park's stage area at 6:30 p.m. on December 30 and will be followed by a special concert the next day at 8:30 p.m.
In addition, several dance and music performances will be held simultaneously on both the last day of this year and the first day of the new year of Horse at other places in the city, including the Ben Nghe Channel area and Gia Dinh 2 Park in Go Vap District.
A bicycle race and a boat race will also be held at Mai Chi Tho Street in District 2 and the Tau Hu Ben Nghe Channel respectively, together with many free music shows for workers and needy children.
