Ho Chi Minh City plans to ban trucks on Nguyen Hue and block all motor vehicles during weekend and holiday nights once it becomes a pedestrian-friendly street in March.
The city transport department said the street should be vehicle-free between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and trucks should be banned though it can grant exceptions in individual cases if necessary.
The transformation of Nguyen Hue into a pedestrian-friendly street would create a big demand in the area for parking motorbikes, and the broad sidewalks of nearby streets would meet the need, it said.
A planned upgrade is expected to cost VND430 billion (US$20.2 million) and will turn the 670-meter street into a cultural center hosting 3D art events and water fountains at night.
