Thick fog at Noi Bai Airport Monday morning prevented many flights from landing or taking off and threw schedules haywire.
News website VietNamNet quoted a spokesperson for Vietnam Airlines as saying 20 flights were affected by the fog, with two arriving from Europe having to land in Da Nang hundreds of kilometers away.
A source from Jetstar Pacific said two of the low-cost carrier's flights from Ho Chi Minh City circled, waiting for the fog to clear, but finally had to land at Vinh airport 400 kilometers from Hanoi and Da Nang.
Several flights of the new private budget airline VietJetAir from HCMC landed more than two hours late.
Things got better after 9 a.m. but the delayed flights in the morning had a knock-on effect on schedules, the airlines said.
Earlier, on March 3, a computer problem during check-in at Noi Bai delayed at least 12 domestic and international flights.
