Vietnam’s world heritage town comes under termite attack
Vietnam’s centuries-old Hoi An Town, a UNESCO world heritage site, is in dire need of some VND6 billion (US$373,600) to fight termites and woodborers that are destroying the town’s acclaimed wooden houses.

The town authorities said they had asked the Ministry of Culture and Information for the money.

The government of Quang Nam province, where Hoi An is located, has, meanwhile, agreed to lend VND10 billion ($622,700) to restore and reinforce the deteriorating houses.

Termites and woodborers were the main cause of the alarming deterioration of 352 houses, the local Heritage Management and Restoration Center said.

It said 155 houses were seriously degraded, and 36 others could collapse any time.

The insects are also eating away 24 of Hoi An’s 32 ‘heritage’ structures.
