The 16th Thanh Nien U.21 National Football Championship is taking place in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan and will be followed by the 6th Thanh Nien International Football Championship further north in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

For the national event, qualifiers took place in four groups in Nghe An, Da Nang, Khanh Hoa and Long An. The best six teams are now competing against reigning champs Nam Dinh and hosts Ninh Thuan until October 5.

Sponsor Techcombank is offering a cash prize of VND215 million to the best player of the event in Ninh Thuan. It will also offer other awards to event participants worth VND5-10 million each.

Sponsor Saigon Beverages JS Company (SABECO) is providing funding for the event's promotional activities.

Phap Luat (Law) newspaper and DP Consulting Co., Ltd. will award each match's "˜fair play' prizes to players, officials, coaches, team members and spectators.

Ninh Thuan Television will broadcast the matches live and provide feeds to VTV6, VTC3, HTVC Sports, K+ and TV stations in other cities and provinces as well.

Respected football analysts Nguyen Van Vinh, Tran Van Mui, Vu Tien Thanh and experienced sport reporters will provide play-by-play and commentary for the games.

"Hopefully, this year's U.21 event will be interesting and beautiful, not only in terms of clean football, but also in providing a springboard for the country's youth football," said Nguyen Cong Khe, one of Vietnam's most respected journalists and chairman of Thanh Nien Media Corporation.

Khe is also chief of the event's organizing committee.

Excitement in Gia Lai

The participation of the Iraqi team promises to make the 6th Thanh Nien U.21 International Championship in Gia Lai October 11-21 an exciting event.

Iraq will send its U19 team to the event. They are the strongest team in the contest, and a heavily favored top-seed. They finished atop Group A at the U19 Asian Football Confederation championship this year with four wins against Bangladesh, Maldives, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore will also send their U21 teams to Gia Lai to prepare their players for the South East Asian Games next year.
