Young Vietnamese tennis ace into semis in Qatar Junior Open

Fifteen-year-old tennis star Nguyen Hoang Thien has booked a semifinal berth at the Qatar International Tennis Federation Junior Open after beating Chun Hun Wong from Hong Kong in straight sets.

Fifth seed Thien played exceptionally to take a 6-4, 7-5 win over Wong, who had beat second seed Egyptian Omar Elkheshen in the first round and Kuwaiti Mohammed Reda in the second round.

In the first round of the Under-18 event, Thien, the 391st-ranked, beat Briton Joshua Page 6-3, 7-6 before defeating German Joel Shreier 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.

In the semifinals, Thien will clash with sixth seed Yannis Baltogiannis from Belgium while top seed Egyptian Seif Eldin El Sherbini will take on third seed Briton Alexander Wilton.

In the boys’ doubles event, Thien and Vietnamese Austrian Nguyen Matthaeus retired after losing 2-6 to Britons Samuel Hutt and Joshua Page in the quarterfinals.
