Vietnamese billiards ace Ma Xuan Cuong finished third at the 2011 carom 3-cushion World Cup in Suwon, Seoul after losing to host player Cho Jae Ho in the semifinals on Sunday.

After losing 2-15 to the 19th-ranked Korean in the first set, the 34th-ranked Vietnamese made greater efforts and won the second set 15-14.

Yet the host displayed the higher rankings performance later on by winning the third and fourth sets 15-11 and 15-12.

Third place was more than expected for Cuong, who played exceptionally and beat the world number 2 Belgian Caudon Frederic in the first round.

Cuong was one of the seven billiards players from Ho Chi Minh City that competed at the event in Seoul from August 28 till September 5.

The event attracted more than 100 players from around the world, including those in the top 15.

Vietnamese players had the opportunity to improve their world rankings and test their skills in preparation for the 26th South East Asian Games in Indonesia in November.

At the 2007 Suwon World Cup, Tran Chi Thanh advanced by finishing as runner-up, the best achievement for a Vietnamese player to date.
