Vu Thi Trang claimed the women’s single title at the White Nights 2015 international badminton challenge at the Sports Hall Arena in Gatchina, Russia on Sunday.
The 23-year-old player from the northern province of Bac Giang, ranked No. 49 globally and seeded No. 5 at the event, defeated No. 2 seed Rong Schafer of the US in two sets, both with 21-14, in the final match that lasted for 40 minutes.
Earlier, Trang defeated Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri 21-6 and 21-13 in the semifinal match.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s No. 1 Nguyen Tien Minh, seeded No. 1 at the event, lost to Vladimir Malkov of Russia in the final match 16-21 and 12-21.
In the men's doubles event, Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia defeated Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge of England 21-10, 21-12 to take the title.
The US$15,000 competition, organized by the National Badminton Federation of Russia in collaboration with the Badminton Federation of Leningrad, attracted 202 players from 32 countries across Asia, Europe, and Americas.
