Vietnam's Xuan Vinh strikes gold in world shooting contest

Hoang Xuan Vinh won gold in the 10m air pistol men event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup 2013 in Changwon, South Korea on Saturday.

Vinh, the 2012 Asian Champion, and Wang Zhiwei of China were on top from the qualifying rounds till the end when Vinh edged ahead.

When the qualification rounds ended, most of the European shooters were swept aside, while 41-year-old Vinh, who ended in fourth place behind Wang at the 2012 London Olympics, hadearned 583 points. This was the same as Wang Zhiwei's total, but Vinh was in second place.

In the final round, a fierce duel broke out between Vinh and Wang, with both taking turns to take the lead before Vinh improved his shooting in the final series to score a total for 200.8 points while Wang ended up with  200.1 points.

This is the first world gold medal for Vinh and for Vietnam. Vinh has earlier won gold in several Southeast Asia competitions.

"I feel very proud," Vinh said after winning his first world gold medal.

The bronze medal went to Indian shooter Prakash Nanjappa, who finished third with 180.2 points, ahead of fourth-placed Tomoyuki Matsuda of Japan with 158.7 points.
