Nguen Hoang Thien finished second at the boys' singles event of the Under-18 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grade 2 in China on Saturday.
In the final match, the 16-year-old Vietnamese, ranked 283rd in the world's junior rankings, lost 2-6, 3-6 to top seed Serbian Nikola Milojevic, ranked 25th.
The Serbian rival was too strong for Thien. However, Thien exceeded expectations by advancing to the finals.
The achievement will help Thien move up several positions in the ITF rankings.
