Vietnam’s second best chess star Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son took the trophy at the 4th edition of the HD Bank International Open Chess Tournament 2014 on Saturday.
With 0.5 points more than other contestants before the start of his final game with the 2012 champ Chinese Ni Hua, Truong Son planned to fight to a draw and he was successful after 23 moves.
This is the first time the third-seeded Truong Son has won the cup. The vicotry came after intense competition throughout the nine games at the event this year.
At the next table, Vietnam’s No.1 star Le Quang Liem, as the top seed, beat compatriot Nguyen Van Huy in the final game while the second-seeded Singaporean contestant Zhang Zhong beat Filipino rival Gomez John Paul.
Truong Son, Quang Liem and Zhang Zhong finished the contest with 7 points but Son was crowned because of better tie-break points. However, the three contestants received the same cash prize of US$12,000.
The road to the trophy was hard for Son. He won the first game over female compatriot Hoang Thi Bao Tram but suffered two consecutive losses to Bersamina Paulo from the Philippines and Liu Xiangyi from China in the second and third games respectively.
Then, he took three consecutive wins over Emojong of Uganda, Raghuram Rao of India and top seed Le Quang Liem. The victory over the defending champ Quang Liem was the turnining point in the contest, leading to Son’s success at the event.
The trophy for the female contestants went to Uzbek player Muminova Nafisa with 5.5 points from nine games. Indonesian contestant Sukandar Irine Kharisma had the same 5.5 points but Muminova Nafisa won the championship because of better tie-break points.
Vietnamese female player Hoang Thi Nhu Y came in third place.
The March 10th – 15th competition attracted 91 players from 16 countries and territories.
