Vietnam's Kim Phung wins gold brace at Asian Junior championships

Vo Thi Kim Phung won two gold medals at the Asian Junior Girls' Championship and the Asian Junior Girls Blitz Championship that closed in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates, on Saturday.

In the Asian Junior Girls' Championship, International Master (IM) Phung was the fourth seed behind compatriot Nguyen Thi Mai Hung, Iran's Hakimifard Ghazal and another compatriot Hoang Thi Nhu Y.

Yet Phung played exceptionally at the event, beating Mai Hung while playing with black pieces on the way to finishing with seven points from nine games.

The silver medal went to fifth seeded Indian, J Saranya, who won 6.5 points, and Mai Hung took the bronze , also with 6.5 points, losing on the basis of lower tie-break scores.

In the boys event, Indian IM Narayanan Srinath retained his title while his compatriot Sahaj Grover came in second and top seed GM Salem Saleh of the host country finished third.

In other chess action, Vietnam's top player Le Quang Liem, 27th in the World Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings with an elo rating of 2717, joined the Moscow club on Sunday to compete at the Russian Clubs Championships from April 7-13.

With 26 super grandmasters with elos of 2,700 and over, the event is seen as a good chance for Liem to earn more points and enter the world's top 20.
