Top seed Le Quang Liem won the 2013 HD Bank International Open Chess Tournament title in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday after drawing 2nd-seeded Hungarian Berkes Ferenc in the final round.

As he was a full point ahead going into the final round match, the 31st-ranked Liem, elo 2709, planned to go for a draw against the 47th-ranked Berkes, elo 2702.

A relaxed attitude and the advantage of playing white pieces enabled the 22-year-old Vietnamese to force the 27-year-old Hungarian to a draw after 30 moves.

This title is very important for Liem, as he earned a total 7.5 points from six wins and three draws. At the two first editions of the tournament in 2011 and 2012, Liem was also the top seed but the titles went to Chinese contestants.

The championship was a reward for Liem's concentrated efforts throughout the event, especially his seventh round win over Zhou Jianchao of China, who was considered to be Liem's main competition in the tournament.

Liem, the only Vietnamese player in the world's top 100, was also awarded a cash prize of US$10,000.
