Vietnamese women footballers have failed to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics after battling to a 3-3 tie against Thailand in the final match of the second qualifying round in Jordan on Sunday.
The Vietnamese women would have topped the group and advanced to the third qualifying round if they had beaten Thailand. They started off well, scoring two goals first before defender Hai Hoa's own goal helped Thailand reduce the margin.
After Thailand made it 2-2, striker Le Thu Thanh Huong put Vietnam in front again; but Thailand scored an equalizer four minutes from full time.
The draw placed Vietnam in third place with seven points, behind group leaders Thailand with 10 points and second-placed Uzbekistan with nine points.
The Thai women will now advance to the third qualifying round where they will play Japan, Australia, China, the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The best two teams will then represent Asia at the London Olympics next year.
