Four Vietnamese women martial artists are competing at the 2010 WTF World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships which began in Urumqi, China on July 17.

Nguyen Thị Hoai Thu, Nghiem Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thanh Thao and Doan Thi Huong Giang arrived in China on Tuesday (July 13) for the four-day contest.

According to the organizers, more than 500 competitors, coaches and referees from 53 countries and territories are participating in the contest this year.

This is the second consecutive year that Vietnamese women taekwondo artists are participating at a top-level event organized by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) after a similar competition in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2009.

Taekwondo martial artists from around the world are selected to compete at the event based on international achievements and rankings; Vietnamese men have not qualified.

For the Vietnamese female taekwondo martial artists, this is considered a good opportunity to gain hands-on experience for the 16th Asian Games, which will take place in Guangzhou, China in November.

Among the four Vietnamese martial artists 25-year-old Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu is the oldest and most experienced.

She won the silver medal in the 59kg category at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar in December 2006, gold medal in the under-57kg category at the 25th South East Asian Games in Laos in December 2009, and gold medal in the under-55kg category at the Asian Martial Games in Bangkok in August 2009. Thu also qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China.
