Long jumper Nguyen Thi Truc Mai on Friday won the first gold medal for host Vietnam at the 2016 Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Ho Chi Minh City.
The 19-year-old athlete from Vinh Long Province completed a jump of 6.34 meters, followed by Thailand's Parinya Chuaimaroeng with 6.28m and China’s Yao Jiayu with 6.04m.
Vietnam’s Le Tu Chinh is expected to win the second gold for Vietnam at the biennial event. She will compete in women’s 100m sprint.
At the 2014 Asian Junior Athletics Championships, Vietnam won a gold medal by Nguyen Thi Oanh in 3,000m hurdle.
The 2016 event has attracted 700 young athletes and coaches from 40 Asian countries and territories, competing in 22 categories.
