Vuong Thi Huyen has pocketed two gold medals in the 48kg category at the 2015 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Phuket, Thailand.
It was a surprise win for Huyen who had not been expected to gain high results competing with strong opponents from host Thailand, China and North Korea.
The weightlifter from Hanoi, however, seized the gold in the snatch for a lift of 86kg, before pocketing another gold after lifting 104 kg in the clean and jerk to defeat her Chinese opponent Huang Yuezhen.
In men’s 56kg, Tran Le Quoc Toan won a silver medal in the snatch for a lift of 152 kg, and a bronze medal in the clean and jerk for 120 kg.
Toan also won an overall silver medal for a total lift of 272 kg.
Vietnam sent 5 weightlifters to the continental-level meet on September 6-12, with the others being Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan, Nguyen Ngoc Trung and Nguyen Thi Thuy.
They are also scheduled to compete at the World Weightlifting Championships in Houston, Texas from November 20-28, where they will bid for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
