Top-seeded M Le Quang Liem of Vietnam finished second at the first Florencio Campomanes Memorial Cup Chess Championships that ended on Friday, September 3, in the Philippines.
Eleventh seed Chinese Grandmaster Zhao Jun (ELO 2589) upstaged 41st-ranked Liem (ELO 2694) and won the tournament named after former FIDE president Florencio Campomanes at the Ninov Aquino Stadium.
Zhao and Liem finished the contest with the same seven points but the Chinese GM was declared winner of the cup by virtue of a higher tiebreak score. They split the first and second prizes, each worth US$9,500.
Vietnam's other chess player Nguyen Huynh Minh Huy earned a total 4.5 points and finished in the 41st position.
In the women's event, Shen Yang of China took the championship with 7.5 points. Vietnam's Hoang Thi Nhu Y with 6 points and Hoang Thi Bao Tram with 5.5 points came in fourth and fifth.
Filipino Florencio Campomanes was the president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) from 1982 till 1995. He was born in 1927 and passed away on the third of May 2010.
The Memorial Cup Chess Championship is expected to last for 10 years with a US$1 million FIDE sponsorship. The second edition of the competition will be held in Vietnam in 2011.
