Vietnam's top shooter, Hoang Xuan Vinh, broke his own record in the 10m Men's Air Pistol event at the 7th Vietnam National Games in Hanoi on Thursday.
The 40-year-old colonel finished with 207 points, breaking his 202.8 point record, which he set during the International Sport Shooting Federation’s Rifle and Pistol World Cup held in the United States this Spring.
Vinh's individual score secured his military team a gold medal with a total of 1,753 points, followed by Hai Duong with 1,730 points and Hanoi with 1,688 points.
In other shooting events on Thursday, Dang Hong Ha of Hanoi won a gold medal in women’s 10m Running Target Mix with 368 points, while Phung Le Huyen of Thanh Hoa won a gold in the men’s 3x40 rifle.
In skeet shooting, Thanh Hoa’s Mai Anh claimed a gold medal in the men's category with 132 points while Hai Duong’s 19-year-old shooter La Phi Yen bagged a gold in the women’s category.
While private citizens are not allowed to own firearms in Vietnam, a small group of shooters hone their skills at government-controlled sporting clubs, which ironically outperformed the military.
The Hanoi club led the medal tally by of the end of Thursday with 70 gold medals, followed by Ho Chi Minh City with 38 golds and the military which took 34 golds.
Shooting was among the events held before the official launch of the ten-day Vietnam National Games 2014 in Nam Dinh Province on December 6, which will be broadcast live by VTV3.
Besides the main host Nam Dinh, many of the 36 sports with 743 events will also be held in Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hoa Binh and Quang Ninh.
