Vietnamese American Jonathan Nguyen, 16, has played well at an on-going International Tennis Federation contest in the central town of Hue.

With his family living and working in Vietnam, Nguyen learned to play tennis in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong from a young age. He is not internationally ranked, so he had to start from the qualifying round in the men's singles event.

After success in the qualifying round, Nguyen went on to take two consecutive wins in the first and second rounds over Thai player Rinla (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Malaysian rival Rocky (6-3, 7-5) to book a berth in the third round against top seed Tang Chih-chun from Taiwan.

Two other Vietnamese juniors, Ly Hoang Nam and Ho Huynh Dan Mach, have also earned berths in the third round at the Grade 5 competition.
