The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) officially appointed Vu Ba Dong as head coach of the national women football team on Wednesday.

VFF made the decision after Chinese coach Chen Yun Fat went home on leave and didn't return after his January 30-February 28 vacation.

According to VFF, Fat, who helped Vietnam win the women's football championship at the 25th South East Asian Games in Vientiane in 2009, said he couldn't come back because China's Dalian Football Federation, where he is an official, wanted him to train its young players.

VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy had said on March 31 that the country's football governing body had wanted to find a foreign coach but there was not enough time before the Women's Asian Cup, which takes place May 19-30 in China's city of Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

The national football governing body chose Dong because he was one of Fat's assistants.

Hy said that given the situation, Dong was the best person for the job.
