Vietnam wins first world gymastics medal

Phan Thi Ha Thanh took the bronze medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2011 in the women's vault event in Tokyo on Saturday.

With the achievement, Ha Thanh has won a berth in the women's singles vault event at the Olympic Games in London next year.

Ha Thanh and her teammates have also earned a berth in the women's team vault event at the London Olympics.

This is the first time Vietnam has won a medal at the world event, though its athletes have entered the final round for the second time.

Thanh finished third with 14,666 points behind American gold medalist McKayla Maronay with 15,300 points and German  silver medalist Oskana Chusovitina with 14,733 points.

The 20-year-old gymnast from Hai Phong City had won two silver medals at the World Cup event Porto, Portugal in 2010.
