Vietnam won 18 gold medals on Tuesday, raising the total number of gold medals won by the Vietnamese sports delegation to 44, at the on-going 26th South East Asian Games in Indonesia.
The 18 gold medals on Tuesday came from the gymnasium (nine golds), track & field (three golds), wresting (two golds) and one gold each in vovinam, shooting, fencing and taekwondo events.
Shooter Tran Quoc Cuong won the first gold of the day for the Vietnamese contingent in the men's 50m pistol after scoring a total 650.7 points. His teammate Hoang Xuan Vinh earned the silver medal with 640.9 points.
In the track and field event, Dao Xuan Cuong won the gold medal in the men's 400-meter hurdles after covering the distance in 51.45 seconds.
Truong Thanh Hang bagged the gold medal in the women's 800-meter race after clocking in at 2 minutes, 2.65 seconds before Duong Van Thai took the gold medal in the men's 800-meter race in 1 minute, 49.42 seconds.
Speaking to Thanh Nien in Palembang, Hang said, "I am sorry I couldn't get closer to the B standard to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Actually, I suffered a muscle injury in the 1,000 meter race before."
In the gymnasium, Do Thi Ngan Thuong won the gold in the women's uneven parallel bars before she took the gold in the women's balance beam.
Phan Thi Ha Thanh won the gold in the women's singles vault before she grabbed the gold in the women's freestyle contest with 13.125 points.
Nguyen Tuan Dat took the gold medal in the men's vault event after scoring 15.925 points, while Nguyen Ha Thanh and Pham Phuoc Hung snatched the gold and silver medals in the men's parallel bars.
Dang Nam and Pham Phuoc Hung won gold and silver medals in the men's still rings after scoring 15.050 points and 14.975 points, respectively.
Hoang Cuong won the gold medal in the men's freestyle before Pham Phuoc Hung won the gold medal in the men's single bar after scoring 14.200 points.
In the vovinam (Vietnamese martial arts) contest, Nguyen Duy Khanh took the gold medal in the men's 60kg event after beating Cambodian rival Lim Paov Hong Yan in the final match.
Tran Van Duc won the gold medal in the men's 120kg traditional wrestling event while Tran Thi Dieu Ninh earned the gold medal in the women's 55kg wrestling competition.
Female taekwondo martial artist Ha Thi Nguyen won the gold medal in the women's under-73kg category after beating Cambodian opponent Sorn Davin 3-2 in the final match.
Female fencer Nguyen Thi Tuoi won the gold in the women's foil event after beating compatriot silver medalist Le Thi Bich 15-10 in the final match. Vu Thanh An won the silver medal in the men's saber event.
Speaking to Thanh Nien in Jakarta, Vietnamese fencing team coach Nguyen Le Ba Quang said, "This is a big victory for the fencing team. We expected to win just two gold medals because we thought it would be very hard.
"However, after three days, the fencers have done a great job and won a total three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals. Tomorrow, we are very likely to win the gold medal in the women's saber team event," he said.
With 44 golds, 46 silvers and 52 bronze medals after four days at the biennial event, the Vietnamese sports athletes are in third spot behind top-placed hosts Indonesia with 76 golds, 60 silvers and 60 bronze medals and second-placed Thailand with 48 golds, 35 silvers and 57 bronze medals.
