Underdogs Vietnam came back from a goal down to upset South Korea 7-3 in the opener of the AFC Futsal Championship in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent on Sunday.

Italian tactician Sergio Gargelli as Vietnam's coach said that Vietnam tried to spring a surprise and they did it very well, aided by a hat-trick by Trong Thien and a double by Ba Tuan.

The good start promised more surprises from the team at the regional indoor football event in Uzbekistan.

The Korean players started to play fast and put constant pressure on their Vietnamese rivals. They converted their dominance to score the opener in only two minutes.

Almost everyone was expecting a barrage of goals from the Koreans but the Vietnamese players kept calm, improved their defense and played with more concentration.

Vietnam scored an equalizer only two minutes later after Trong Thien scored from a free kick before his two more goals to help Vietnam lead 3-1 after 24 minutes.

Then the Vietnamese players began to tire and make mistakes.

Anh Dung was sent off in the 27th minute after two yellow cards, and things got worse in the 31st minute when Shin Jong-hoon scored from a penalty kick.

Two minutes later, Hoang Giang made it 4-2 for Vietnam but Jeongnam Kim pulled another goal back for Korea in the next minute.

However, it went well for Vietnam later, as Hoang Giang and a double by Ba Tuan earned them a big win.

Vietnam will play their next Group C game against Kyrgyzstan, who lost 2-4 to Thailand despite leading by two goals to nil after 14 minutes.

In Group A, Indonesia thrashed Taiwan 6-1 while hosts Uzbekistan defeated Lebanon 3-1.

Iran hammered Tajikistan 19-2 while Kuwait suffered a 2-4 defeat to Australia in Group B.

In Group D, powerhouse Japan strolled to a 5-1 victory over China while Turkmenistan lost 3-5 to Iraq.
