Vietnam will play host Cambodia in a semifinal of the 2016 AFF U-16 Youth Championship Thursday after remaining undefeated in the group stage.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
“It’s great to play against hosts Cambodia in the semifinal because all the players will be excited by many spectators in the stadium,” a member of the Vietnamese coaching staff, who asked not to be named, said.
He said Cambodia are not very strong and Vietnam could reach the final if they play well.
“The strongest opponent is Thailand. They have sent their strongest players to the event to prepare for the upcoming AFC U-16 Championship.”
Vietnam secured 13 points to win Group A with four wins and a draw, followed by Australia with 10 points. The other teams in the group, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippines, were eliminated.
Thailand topped Group B with a perfect 12 points from four matches, followed by Cambodia with nine points. The group had only five teams after Indonesia withdrew.
In the other semifinal, Thailand take on Australia at 3:30 p.m., also on Thursday.
The final and third-place matches will be played on July 23.
