The Ministry of Information and Communications has fined Vietnam Television for broadcasting wrongful information about the age of the famed U-19 striker Cong Phuong.
The national television station was fined VND15 million (US$701) and ordered to issue a public correction after running a program on VTV24 channel on November 8 and 16 that included false rumors charging Phuong with having lied about his age.
Cong Phuong, the captain of Vietnam U-19 football team, has performed impressively as a member of the Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG.
Soon after his club took the title at the Thanh Nien Newspaper U21 Football Tournament, rumors began to circulate that Phuong was actually born in 1993 and had lied about his age to qualify for competition.
Following the rumors, VTV24 broadcast two programs that included the accusations.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG petitioned the Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Justice to investigate the incident.
Investigators found that Phuong had been born in 1995 as he claimed.
