Vietnam table tennis champs retain titles

The country's best male and female table tennis stars Doan Kien Quoc and Mai Hoang My Trang have retained their titles after wins in the national finals in Tien Giang on Friday.

Hanoi's Kien Quoc, who won the men's singles gold medal at the sixth Francophone Games in Beirut, Lebanon in October 2009, thrashed Huy Bao of Ho Chi Minh City 4-0 to successfully defend his men's singles national table tennis championship.

In the women's singles category, Mai Hoang My Trang of Ho Chi Minh City, who took the silver medal at the sixth Francophone Games last year, snatched a 4-2 win over her cousin Mai Xuan Hang, also of Ho Chi Minh City.

Earlier, duo Trang and Hang helped Ho Chi Minh City win the gold medals in the women's doubles and women's team categories.

The National Table Tennis championships contest from May 10-14 attracted almost 100 players from 15 teams nationwide.

The Ho Chi Minh City team finished the five-day competition in first place with three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.

The Hanoi team came in second with three gold and three bronze medals while third place went to the Military team with one gold, four silver and one bronze.
