Vietnam remain in Asia Pacific Davis Cup Grade 3

Vietnamese tennis players will remain at the Grade 3 level in Asia Pacific Davis Cup after losing 0-3 to hosts Iran in the deciding encounter on May 2.

In this year's regional Grade 3 contest, Vietnamese players clashed with rivals from Bangladesh, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria and hosts Iran in two groups from April 28 till 30.

After the round-robin matches in the group stage, the Vietnamese players finished second behind Lebanon in Group B while Iran was in second place behind Syria in Group A.

The four then played round-robin matches again on May 1 and 2 to choose the best two teams for the region's Davis Cup Grade 2 contests next year.

Since Vietnam had lost 1-2 to Lebanon in Group B, they had to beat Syria and Iran to be promoted.

The Vietnamese had a good start on May 1 when they defeated Syria 2-1. The country's best player, Do Minh Quan, came back from a set behind to beat Romain Radwan 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Then, Thanh Trung lost to Issam Tawil 1-6, 1-6; but the duo Minh Quan and Quoc Khanh beat Hayan and Maarouf 7-6 and 6-2.

In the decider against Iran on May 2, the Vietnamese players failed to upset the hosts.
