Vietnam men draw with the Philippines at chess Olympiad

Vietnamese and Filipino men both climbed one place after a 2-2 draw in the 10th round of the World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul on Saturday.

The Vietnamese men's average elo rating is higher than their opponents and they are seeded  27th against the Filipinos' 35, but the latter have so far put on a better performance at the 40th edition of the chess Olympiad.

Before the 10th round, they stood in the 12th position while the Vietnamese men were in the 16th  out of the 150 men teams at the event. Also, the Vietnamese men played with black pieces, which was a bit of a disadvantage for them.

The Philippines's No.1 So Wesley (elo rating of 2652) drew with Le Quang Liem (2693), Oliver Barbosa (2554) drew with Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (2639), Eugene Torre (2469) drew with Nguyen Van Huy (2506) and Mark Paragua (2508) drew with Nguyen Duc Hoa (2505).

In the final round of the tournament, the Vietnamese men with white pieces will play the Uzbekistani team, which is seeded 33rd and currently stand in the 10th position.

In the women's section, the Vietnamese lost 1.5-2.5 to Georgia. It was their third consecutive loss and they fell to the 40th spot out of the 127 teams from around the world.

In the final round, the Vietnamese women will clash with hosts Turkey 2016, currently in the 46th place. (Turkey has three men and three women teams at the event: Turkey, Turkey 2016 and Turkey 2023).
