The Vietnamese men’s badminton team has booked a berth in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Thomas and Uber Cup Asia Zone after beating Singapore 3-2 in Thailand on Tuesday.
World number eight Nguyen Tien Minh had no difficulty in beating Wong Ziliang Derek (ranked 100th) in straight sets (21-13, 21-19).
In the next game, Nguyen Hoang Nam, ranked 139th, lost the first set 17-21 to 156th-ranked Yongzhao Ashton Chen, but won the next two games 21-9, 21-19.
In the third game, Duong Bao Duc ended Singapore’s hopes by beating Chen Guorui in straight sets.
The Vietnamese team lost both its doubles matches, because they were focused on saving energy for the fight against Indonesia for the top place in Group A, set to take place on Wednesday (Feb 24).
In an earlier Group A match on Monday against Indonesia, Singapore had lost 1-4 and the loss against Vietnam sent them out of the tournament.
The Thomas Cup is also known as the Badminton World Men’s Team Championships.
