A Tuesday drawing in Melbourne put Vietnam in Group E along with Uzbekistan, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2015 qualifiers.
Vietnam 's coach Phan Thanh Hung said, "The rivals in this group are not too strong, but our players must play well if they want to qualify.
"This is a big game of the continent, so the team will make every effort to win a good position in the group stage."
At the AFC Asian Cup 2007, hosts Vietnam upset UAE and drew with Qatar to advance to the quarterfinals at Hanoi's My Dinh Stadium.
Other Southeast Asian countries will face tough challenges in the qualifying round for the 2015 event. Indonesia is in Group C with Iraq, China and Saudi Arabia; Singapore in Group A with Jordan, Syria and Oman; Thailand in Group B with Iran, Kuwait and Lebanon; and Malaysia in Group D with Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen.
