Vietnam hammers Singapore in regional women's football tournament

Vietnam thrashed Singapore 9-1 in their Group A opening match at the  South East Asian Women's Football Championship 2011 in Laos on Sunday.

The Vietnamese women proved far superior to the rivals from Singapore, with Nguyen Thi Hoa scoring four goals and Huynh Nhu pitching in with a hat-trick. Kim Tien and Nguyen Thi Phuong scored the other two goals.

The team next clases with Laos on Tuesday before playing Indonesia on Thurday.

Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and the Philippines are competing in Group B. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals on Sunday before the final on Tuesday October 25.

In other action, Myanmar's Under-21 men's team won the Mekong BIDC Cup 2011 after beating Thailand 2-1 in the final match in Phnom Penh on Sunday.

Earlier, Thailand had beaten  hosts Cambodia 2-1 in the semifinals while Myanmar beat Vietnam 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the two teams drew 1-1 during regular play.
