Vietnam's under-23 football team has been eliminated from the South East Asian Games in Myanmar after losing 2-1 in their last group stage match with arch-rivals Malaysia on Tuesday.
Vietnam has been swept aside after the defeat to Malaysia because they had previously lost to Singapore after beating Brunei and Laos.
Vietnam was expected to beat Malaysia to qualify for the semifinals but the Vietnamese U23s were uncoordinated and sloppy.
The Malaysian U23s played better and scored two goals before Vietnamese striker Mac Hong Quan scored a consolation goal for Vietnam in the final minute of added time in the second half.
Speaking after the match, Coach Hoang Van Phuc apologized to Vietnamese football fans for the team's poor performance at the event.
