Vietnam Football Federation (VFF)'s chairman Nguyen Trong Hy has suggested employing local coaches for the country's national football team and the national under-23 team.
Hy made the statement on Saturday after VFF's Standing Committee voted at a meeting on Thursday to remove German coach Falko Goetz from the position of Vietnam's national football team and the national U23 team.
The Standing Committee will wait for an opinion from the federation's Coaches Council and from the General Department of Physical Training and Sports.
The Standing Committee will then have another meeting and wait for Goetz to return to Vietnam on January 4 from his vacation in Germany before meeting him and suggesting that his contract be terminated before it expires.
VFF has not fired Goetz yet, but the federation's chairman has suggested hiring local coaches for the positions and said, "Not a few local coaches are talented enough, so we will employ one coach for the national team and one for the u23 team.
"Previously, we used a foreign coach for those two positions because we wanted to make good use of the 'gray substance' of a coach that received a large amount of money paid by VFF and the State."
Hy said Malaysia's u23 team won two consecutive South East Asian Games in 2009 and 2011 because it used local coaches, and Vietnam should learn the lesson from Malaysia.
"Additionally, the past two seasons of V-League proved that local coaches did a better job than foreign coaches," Hy said.
The best local coaches for the positions are Mai Duc Chung, Le Thuy Hai, Le Huynh Duc and Hoang Anh Tuan.
