Vietnam finished their Under-22 Asian football championship campaign in second-to-last place in Group G after losing 0-2 to South Korea in the final group stage match in Myanmar on Tuesday.
In fact, Vietnam had already failed to qualify for the tournament after losing 0-3 to Malaysia on June 30 while South Korea (RoK), together with Malaysia, had qualified for the 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup event next year.
This allowed coach Lu Dinh Tuan to use several young players like Van Hung, Trung Tin and Xuan Hung from the very beginning, leaving some regulars on the bench.
RoK took the lead midway through the first half with striker Youngji scoring the opener. Their next goal came in the first minute of the stoppage time of the first half with midfielder Jeong Jong Hee finding the net.
After the break, coach Tuan replaced Van Thuan, Trung Tin and Hong Quan with regulars Van Quyet, Dinh Bao and Van Dai but the Vietnamese could not score even a consolation goal.
That was the fourth loss for Vietnam at the event including a 1-2 defeat to Taiwan in the opener on June 23rd and a 1-3 loss to hosts Myanmar on the 26th. Vietnam's only win was a 9-0 drubbing of the Philippines on June 28.
