Vietnam finished fourth at the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championship after losing 0-8 to Thailand in the third place play-off match in Uzbekistan Sunday.
The Vietnamese media had speculated that coach Bruno Jose Garcia Formoso might have rested several key players in the semifinal against Iran that Vietnam lost 1-13 two days earlier to prepare for the third place match.
Thailand took an early lead in the fifth minute with a goal by Jetsada Chdech.
In trying to level the scores, Vietnam sported holes in the back and let in more goals. From there, it was catchup until the end as Thailand scored seven more, four of them by Suphawut Thueanklang, two by Suphawut Chaemcharoen, and the other by Jirawat Sornwichian.
Vietnam had lost 1-3 to Thailand in a group match, but managed to defeat Japan 6-5 in the quarterfinals.
By advancing to the last four, Vietnam secured a historic ticket to the 2016 Futsal World Cup in Colombia in September.
