Tuan Tai scored an 78th-minute winner to give Vietnam's under-21 football team a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Malaysia, which earned them the third place at Thanh Nien Newspaper’s U21 International Football Tournament in Can Tho City Tuesday.
Malaysia faced strong defense from Vietnam in the first minutes before switching to swift counterattacks, including one ended with a goal by Selvaraj from outside the box in extra time of the first half.
However, in the 55th minute the unmarked midfielder Phi Son converted Quach Tan's pass and slotted it home to pull Vietnam level.
The host players continued with several attacks at Can Tho Stadium where 40,000 spectators stayed in heavy rains to support the home team.
In the 78th minute, Tuan Tai scored a goal with a hard kick after receiving a pass, also from left wing, of Quach Tan.
The striker got a yellow card as he removed his jersey to celebrate his goal.
Malaysia rushed to attack but all efforts were blocked by Thanh Nien Newspaper Vietnam players, who mostly withdrawing to home field for defending with rare counterattacks.
The final match between Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG and Thailand will kick off at 6 p.m. on the same day.
