Vietnam footballers defeated Laos 3-0 in Group A qualifying match at the ASEAN Football Federation’s Suzuki Cup at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on Tuesday but still have to wait for another match to compete for a ticket to the semifinals.
Facing a stronger Vietnam, Laos focused on strong defense in the first half to block most attacks by Vietnam players at the beginning of the match.
Unlike the 2-2 draw match against Indonesia on November 22, Cong Vinh, Tan Tai, Anh Duc, Van Bien and Huy Toan played at the beginning of the match under a new strategy by Coach Toshiya Miura.
Vietnam players managed to break through Laos’ defense in the 27th minute when Tan Tai had a pass for Vu Minh Tuan to score a goal.
Vietnam stepped up their attacks in the second half but it was only until in the 84th minute that Cong Vinh scored the second goal for Vietnam after the ball bounced out from a shot by Tan Tai.
Four minutes later, Huy Hung scored the third goal for Vietnam from a close shot.
Earlier on the same day, Philippines crushed Indonesia 4-0 to secure first slot to the semifinals in Group A with a total of six points, including three from a 4-1 win over Laos.
Meanwhile, Vietnam had four points after two matches, including one from a 2-2 draw with Indonesia.
Vietnam will need a draw or win over Philippines to advance to the next round. Otherwise, the second ticket will be decided on detailed points between Vietnam and Indonesia.
