Vietnam's U23 national male football team booked a semifinal berth at the 26th South East Asian Games after thrashing Brunei 8-0 on Saturday.
The thumping margin would gave the team a boost in their next game against Malaysia or hosts Indonesia.
Also, coach Falko Goetz on Saturday was able to use all his substitutes to get an idea about who he can use in the next matches.
Brunei did not put up a good performance on Saturday, but they had some serious scoring chances that were a warning to the Vietnamese players that they could pay dearly for similar mistakes against better teams.
Speaking after the Saturday match, Goetz said, "I am pleased with the result of the match. Our players won an important match to take the top spot. The Vietnamese strikers played well. The goals they scored will help them feel more confident in the next games."
Brunei's team coach Dayem Bin Hj Ali said, "Our defenders, especially the goalkeeper, played very badly in the first half. That was why we conceded several goals.
"The Vietnamese defenders made some mistakes, too; but unfortunately, our players couldn't score a goal. Vietnam was too strong, so we could do nothing in this match."
