Vietnam's top chess player Le Quang Liem beat Spaniard Vallejo Pons Francisco in the second round of the World Cup in Tromso, Norway, on Friday and takes on world No.4 Russian Alexander Grischuk in the third.
After a 1-1 tie in the standard chess format the day before, Liem, ranked 42nd in the world with an elo rating of 2702 and playing black pieces, again drew with the 41st ranked Spaniard in the first rapid game after 35 moves.
But he had the advantage of white in the second game and attacked relentlessly to beat Francisco in 49 moves.
Liem is expected to have a tough match against Grischuk, who has won the World Blitz Chess titles twice.
Liem has not played against Grischuk in the standard category before but drew 1-1 with him at the 2013 World Blitz Chess Championships before winning the trophy.
The third round berth has earned the 22-year-old Liem a US$16,000 cash prize from the organizers. He will get $25,000 if he can beat Grischuk to earn the last 16.
Earlier Vietnam's second best player, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son lost to 29th-ranked Russian Dmitry Andreikin in the second round on Thursday. But the 2nd round berth earned him $10,000.
