Vietnam bowed out of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2012 after losing 3-1 to Group A hosts Thailand at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium on Friday.
Held 1-1 by Myanmar in the opening match and losing 1-0 to the Philippines in their second group stage match, the Vietnamese footballers played better in the final group stage game, but not well enough to avoid defeat.
Impatience and lack of caution in the defense cost the Vietnamese players although the Thai players did not launch many attacks and did not have all their favorite players in the match.
Thai striker Kirati Keawsombat scored a brace and Vietnamese winger Van Quyet pulled one back before central fullback Gia Tu scored an own goal to hand the victory to the hosts.
In the other match, the Philippines beat Myanmar 2-0 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament as the second-placed team of the group.
The loss is an alarming warning that Vietnamese football has been going downhill since winning the AFF Suzuki Cup championship in 2008.
