Vietnam defeated Timor-Leste 2-0 to take Group B lead at the 2015 AFF U19 Youth Championship at Laos National Stadium in Vientiane on Tuesday.
Vietnam pressured on goalkeeper Fagio Pereira right from the beginning of the match but only took the lead in the 27th minute with a close distance volley by Lam Thuan after receiving a good pass from the left wing by Thanh Hao.
Before the match, Coach Hoang Anh Tuan said Timor-Leste sent a strong team to the league but he was looking forward to a win.
“I saw them playing against Malaysia on August 23. They lost 1-2 but did not play as bad as many people had thought. They have good physique and coordination,” he said.
In the 75th minute, Tien Linh was sent to the field to speed up the match and he scored a goal in the 89th minute after shooting the ball through goalkeeper Pereira’s legs.
 
 
Vietnam leads Group B with 3 points followed by Malaysia and Myanmar, also with 3 points but with fewer winning goal. Both Singapore and Timor-Leste has no point so far.
In Group A, Cambodia is leading with 4 points, followed by the Philippines and Thailand with 3 points. Host Laos ranks 4th with 1 point, followed by Brunei.
Vietnam will play against Malaysia in its next group match at 7 p.m. on August 27.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan said that Vietnam Football Federation did not set any target for his team at the championship.
“However, I pressure myself by setting a target of winning the championship.”
