The Vietnamese men, ranked 38th in the world, took a 3-2 win over Latvia, ranked 51st, at the 2010 Liebherr World Team Table Tennis Championships in Moscow on Monday.
Tran Tuan Quynh beat Burgis 3-0 in the first game and Dinh Quang Linh defeated Kartuzovs 3-1.
Latvia equalized, however, after Vasiljevs won against Vietnam's number one player Doan Kien Quoc 3-2 and Burgis defeated Quang Linh in straight sets.
In the decider, Tuan Quynh beat Kartuzovs in straight sets to take the first win for Vietnam.
On Sunday, Vietnam suffered a 0-3 defeat to Brazil, 12 places higher than Vietnam in the world rankings.
At the 50th edition of the tournament from May 23-30 this year, Vietnam is in Group G alongside Brazil, Egypt (ranked 30th), Norway (ranked 35th), Bulgaria (ranked 45th) and Latvia.
Paddlers from 72 countries and territories are competing for titles over eight days at the Olympic Stadium Arena in Moscow, Russia.
